Michael P. Lisanti Assumes Editorial Helm of
The American Journal of Pathology

Renowned cancer researcher, Dr. Lisanti is currently Professor of Cancer Biology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson’s Kimmel Cancer Center in Philadelphia.  He also holds the Margaret Q. Landenberger Endowed Professorship for Breast Cancer Research at Jefferson.  His extensive contributions to scientific research have earned him a regular place on the list of Most-Cited Scientists in Biology and Biochemistry (Source: Thomson’s Essential Science Indicators; 2007 ranking: #23).  To date he has published approximately 270 scientific papers, many which appear in what Dr. Lisanti calls “my favorite journal,” The American Journal of Pathology.

The AJP has over 100 years of publication history, and is widely recognized as the premiere journal in disease pathobiology, garnering over 30,000 citations to its articles each year and earning its place as the #1 ranked journal in field of pathology (Source: Thomson’s Journal Citation Reports).  The breadth and depth of Dr. Lisanti’s interest in disease investigation matches the broad and far-reaching scope of the AJP, characterized by the journal’s tagline, “The Cellular and Molecular Biology of Disease”.

Dr. Lisanti’s interests have spanned a broad range of disease research, including heart disease and diabetes, muscular dystrophy, cancer, and aging.  He is widely regarded as the world’s leading expert in the competitive field of research on caveolins, a family of membrane-proteins which play an important role in various aspects of cellular metabolism such as cholesterol transport, and whose role in cell signaling and transformation is linked with cancer, particular breast cancer.

AJP is published by and is the official journal of the American Society for Investigative Pathology (ASIP).  ASIP’s President, Mark L. Tykocinski, MD summarized the ASIP’s selection process by saying, “Dr. Lisanti’s scientific curiosity and personal dynamism energize those around him, and we are excited by what his vision and creativity can bring to the AJP and to disease pathogenesis research as a whole.”

“We congratulate Michael Lisanti on his well deserved appointment as Editor-in-Chief," adds Kimmel Cancer Center director Richard Pestell, MD, PhD, Chair of the Department of Cancer Biology at Jefferson Medical College.  "His widely recognized expertise in a number of fields makes him uniquely qualified for the position.”
